According to former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) are emerging as a formidable force in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. He noted the team’s impressive batting lineup, primarily composed of young Indian talent, and praised the effective leadership of coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer.

Last season, PBKS made a strong impression by finishing as runners-up after a close contest with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who are the defending champions this year. Starting the 2026 season on a high note, they secured victories in their first two matches before inclement weather resulted in a draw against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

While discussing the team’s prospects on JioHotstar, Aakash Chopra expressed confidence in the Punjab Kings, emphasizing their solid form and youthful batting strategy. “The Punjab Kings are certainly a team to watch this season. They performed exceptionally well last year, reaching the final, and their strong start this season reinforces their potential. Their batting lineup stands out, relying on young Indian players with limited international exposure, complemented by seasoned overseas players, creating a well-rounded team dynamic,” he stated.

Notable young batsmen Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya made significant contributions during the IPL 2025 season, scoring 549 and 475 runs, respectively. Captain Shreyas Iyer led the charge with an impressive 604 runs, topping the batting charts.

Chopra acknowledged the leadership prowess of Iyer and Ponting, pointing out that while PBKS’s bowling attack may not be stellar, it effectively meets their needs. He also mentioned the team’s disappointment regarding the abandoned match, suggesting they would have felt confident in their chances based on their recent performances. “Their bowling might not be exceptional, but it’s efficient, and the management under Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting is commendable. They might feel a bit unfortunate about the abandoned game, as their current form would have likely seen them through more often than not,” Chopra remarked.
