The Punjab Kings have hit the ground running in IPL 2026, securing two consecutive wins after finishing as runners-up last season. Sairaj Bahutule, the team’s spin bowling coach, attributes this early success to a vibrant dressing-room atmosphere.
In an interview with ANI, Bahutule highlighted the importance of a strong internal culture and a systematic approach. “The environment has been outstanding since last year, and we’re progressing steadily through the tournament,” he remarked.
Discussing the Impact Player rule, Bahutule expressed his enthusiasm for its introduction. He sees it as a chance for more players to showcase their talents. “Having an additional player allows for greater expression of skills, especially for all-rounders. While opportunities for top bowlers and batters are always present, this change gives twelve players a chance to shine instead of just eleven, which is definitely a positive development,” he noted.
Bahutule also praised the coaching staff, saying, “Ricky Ponting, James Hopes, and Brad Haddin are exceptional. I’m thoroughly enjoying working with Ricky. Having faced him in Test matches, I appreciate his coaching brilliance and the freedom he gives us. Hopes offers great support as the fast-bowling coach, and Haddin brings invaluable experience.”
He also spoke highly of Cooper Connolly, the 22-year-old Australian all-rounder, who has made a significant impact, debuting against the Gujarat Titans with a match-winning score of 72 and contributing 36 against the Chennai Super Kings. Bahutule credited Ponting’s faith in Connolly during the auction, noting, “Ricky believed in him as a player and an all-rounder. He has proven his potential in these two matches. As a young talent, he’s eager to perform in India and showcase his abilities to the world. I am confident he has a bright future ahead with Australia.”
